Special Issues Effecting Domestic Partners
Domestic partners, or same sex couples, have special issues when planning their estates.
While some states, such as New Jersey, recognizes same sex couples and affords the same rights as married couples to those that conducted a civil ceremony, not all states do. Additionally, because many same sex couples only have children through adoption special attention to estate planning is necessary.
Our office helps such clients plan their estates with special attention paid to issues regarding adopted children, reducing estate size in light of a possibly unavailable martial exemption, providing for loved ones, creating healthcare proxies, and powers of attorney.
