Antenuptial Agreements
The agreement that is to last forever
The antenuptial agreement, more commonly referred to as the prenuptial agreement, is an essential document to all couples that wish to marry. Even without bringing in all the statistics about the American divorce rate, this document has some very important provisions that can create stability in a marriage. The agreement accomplishes the important goal of delineating all rights to property and custody at the outset in order to avoid the pitfall of grasping for straws. Should the document never be used then it may well be the couple's greatest investment in their marriage and future.
Some important provisions include:
Expected financial contributions
Counseling
Adoption
Asset division
Child Custody
Alimony
A telling point about the potential success of a marriage is if the couple can agree on these important issues in advance of marriage. With the proper tools of problem solving and compromise the couple will be on their way to "until death do us part."
As an anecdote goes: if cell phone companies wrote prenuptials, no one would get divorced.
